ABOUT COWPER200 |
The eighteenth of August 2009 marks the bicentenary of the arrival of the Reverend William Cowper and his family in the Colony of New South Wales. Some of his descendents and other interested people have formed a committee - Cowper200 - to organise a commemoration and a family reunion around this time. This steering committee believes this would be a fitting time to acknowledge the contribution made by the Reverend William Cowper to life in New South Wales and Australia. The Reverend William Cowper, 1778 - 1858, (Archdeacon of Cumberland, Senior Assistant Chaplain of the Colony, Rector. St Philip's Church Hill, Sydney, 1809 - 1858) and his sons and daughters all made significant contributions to the political, administrative, economic and social development of New South Wales during the nineteenth century. This included Henry the first resident of Australia to become a medical practitioner, Thomas grazier, school principal and magistrate, Charles, later Sir Charles, five-times Premier of New South Wales, instigator and President of the Sydney Railway Company, William Macquarie the first Australian-born minister of religion, later Dean of the Sydney Anglican Diocese, Sedgwick Spelman, businessman, landowner and justice of the peace and his daughters Mary Stephena, Elizabeth Ann and Isabella. Some Notable DescendantsLater generations include Charles Cowper (1834 - 1911) also a parliamentarian and later magistrate who was appointed Sheriff of New South Wales between 1874 and 1896, Andrew King Cowper (1898 - 1980) war hero, grazier and horticulturalist and Norman Leithbridge Cowper, later Sir Norman, (1896 - 1987) an outstanding legal mind; and other family members who have contributed significantly during the twentieth century, both in times of war and peace; through their contribution to public administration, the church, academia and business. This website is therefore dedicated to William Cowper and his family, our family, in the hope that it will help inspire future generations to complete their life's work, whatever their calling, with diligence and courage
